Inhalation has long been seen as a route of delivery for drugs; in 1860, Henry Hyde Salter published a systematic review of treatment options distinguishing depressants (e.g. tartar-emetic), stimulants (e.g. coffee) and sedatives (e.g. opium). However, despite the prevalence of inhaled medications today for topical treatment of the respiratory tract, there have been few products launched in recent years aimed at the systemic delivery of drugs via the lungs. This is not through a lack of interest; there are a large number of potential applications in the pipeline.
